A wonderful addition to a warm and sunny patio or herb garden, the foliage of this decorative herb will release a strong, fruity scent each time it is brushed past or gently touched. Not only do the leaves of this pineapple sage smell great, but they are also edible, and they can be used to jazz up summer drinks or salads - and in late summer, Salvia elegans offers the added bonus of showy clusters of bright scarlet flowers to enjoy!

  • Garden care:
Choose a sunny, sheltered spot with warm, free-draining soil, adding compost at planting and watering regularly while it establishes. It grows best with steady warmth, so choose a position protected from wind and cold, or keep it in a large pot that can be moved as needed. Trim the tips through the season to encourage a bushier shape and stronger flowering later on, and remove any damaged or leggy stems at the start of summer.

As a tender perennial, it will not tolerate UK frost, so move it to a frost-free place such as a greenhouse, porch, or unheated conservatory when temperatures drop. Keep plants on the dry side through winter, watering only enough to stop the compost completely drying out, and return them outdoors once all risk of frost has passed.
