The rich green leaves of this new star jasmine start turning wine-red as the temperatures drop in autumn, and this colouring intensifies throughought winter before reverting back to green again in spring. Like the species, it will still produce an abundance of highly scented, white star-shaped flowers in summer, but Winter Ruby is said to be a little hardier than most (the breeders claim that it has survived in temperatures as low as -17°C), so it may be a tougher option for colder regions. It's also a more compact form, so it's definitely a great choice for a smaller garden or larger pot.

  • Garden care:
Ideally suited to south-facing walls and fences in warm, sheltered gardens, the twining stems of star jasmine can be trained onto sturdy supports including wires, trellis or freestanding climbing frames. Alternatively, consider planting into a large patio pot filled with loam-based compost, facilitating easy relocation to a sheltered spot during the cooler months. In regions that experience prolonged or severe frost, grow under the protection of a spacious, cool greenhouse or conservatory. Requiring little maintenance, a gentle trim in February or March will help keep its size within bounds.
